Many people believe, erroneously, that the National Park of the Picos de Europa may only be discovered and experienced through trekking and mountaineering, but our aim is to prove to you that, if you love the mountains, nature and cylcing, this natural space is ideal to plan a cycling journey, travel along beautiful routes surrounded by awesome rock walls which will make you feel small and humble in the shadown of such majestic nature as you ascend through spectalular mountain passes with views of the highest peaks of the Picos de Europa.
In the National Park of The Picos de Europa the mountains are divided into three main masses, the Western part, corresponding to Covadonga, the Central (Urrieles) and the Western (Andara). The route we propose covers all three masses and you will crown the mythical passes of Pandetrave, Panderruedas, San Glorio, Collada de la Hoz and the ascent to Fuente Dé, amid the majestic flight of Royal Eagles or BoneBreaker Vultures.
Saturaday: Cangas de Onís – Fuente Dé (Potes)
Peddle along the banks of the river Cares, weave through the deep gorges and mountain paths of the Picos and ascend to the mountain passes seen in the Spanish vuelta, ending up in Fuente De. Perhaps you will be inspired to imitate Alberto Contador repeating his brave achievement in reaching the finish line in a proud, hard-won achievement, as did the champion from Madrid in the stage of the 2012 Vuelta which ended in this same spot.
Sunday: Fuente Dé – Cangas de Onís
High-mountain stage. Long and difficult ascents to mountain passes in the very heart of the Picos, which reward us with fantastic views of surrounding peaks and gorgeous forests. You will ascend to the passes of San Glorio, Pandetrave, Panderruedas y Covadoga´s Lakes. An unmissable challenge!
